Tips For Clearing A Blocked Drain Apr 03, 2024

Blocked drains are one of the most common plumbing issues homeowners encounter. As a homeowner, it is important to know how to deal with blocked drains so that they do not bring your normal routine to a halt. Our skilled and experienced plumbers have put together seven tips to help you deal with blocked drains.

Boiling Water

This is the simplest way to clear minor clogs caused by grease buildup, soap scum, and food waste. Sometimes, a simple solution is all you need to clear a blocked drain. Carefully pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain and wait to see if the clog clears.

Baking Soda & Vinegar

A combination of baking soda and vinegar is effective for clearing minor clogs caused by soap scum, grease, or hair. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of white vinegar. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes, then flush with hot water. The fizzing reaction can help loosen minor blockages.

Use a Plunger

Plungers are ideal for clearing clogs in bathroom sinks, kitchen sinks, bathtubs, and toilets. Place the plunger over the drain opening, ensuring a good seal. Plunge forcefully and repeatedly for a minute or two. The up-and-down thrusts can help dislodge the blockage. Just be sure to use the right plunger for the clogged drain. If it’s a clogged toilet, use a flange plunger, which is designed to create a tight seal in the toilet bowl.

Coat Hanger

For clogs in the first 5cm to 10cm of the drain, a coat hanger can act as a makeshift drain snake. Straighten a wire coat hanger and create a small hook at the end. Carefully insert the hook into the drain and try to snag the clog. After you’ve removed the clog, flush the drain with hot water to clear any loose debris.

Grab the Drain Snake

If you’re experiencing tougher clogs, a drain snake can save the day. Insert the snake into the drain and turn the handle to feed the cable down the pipe. The cable can break up and remove the blockage. A drain snake is fairly easy to use, but it can damage your pipes if you use the tool incorrectly. If you encounter any difficulties or the clog persists, consider calling a plumbing repair service to avoid causing further problems.

Remove and Clean the P-Trap

The P-trap is the curved section of pipe under your sink that traps debris and prevents sewer gases from entering your home. This fixture is notorious for forming clogs, especially if you’re fond of pouring grease and oil down your kitchen sink. If you’ve tried plunging your kitchen sink with no success, the clog could be lodged in the P-trap. You can try removing the P-trap and cleaning out any built-up gunk. If you’re not comfortable removing the P-trap yourself, call a nearby plumbing service for help.

Call a Professional Plumber

Plungers, drain snakes, and other DIY methods are great for everyday clogs, but some blockages might require professional intervention. Deep-seated clogs, as well as those caused by tree roots and broken pipes, can be tricky to deal with. If you’re experiencing a stubborn clog caused by pipe damage, mineral buildup, or foreign objects, it is always best to call a professional plumbing repair service for professional drain cleaning or pipe repair.
